Two day exam administered on the last Tuesday and Wednesday in February and July in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, PA; and the Board of Law Examiners has contracted with the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster, PA. to be the site for the February 2018 bar examination.

Starting December 28, 2018, applicants must submit fingerprints for the purpose of the Board verifying the identity of the applicant and obtaining a current record of any criminal history.

Deadline and fees:  Filing Fees and Deadlines  - Deadlines: The deadline for the February examination is December 1st; the deadline for the July examination is May 1st. There is no provision for late filing. Starting with the February 2013 bar examination, applicants who graduated from a law school located in a country other than the United States must submit their applications by November 1 for the February exam and April 1 for the July exam.  Exam fee: $450 (non-attorneys); $800 (attorneys)

Starting with the July 2012 bar examination, all applicants will be permitted to use a laptop for the essay portion of the examination at no additional cost. This service is strictly optional but applicants wishing to use a laptop must register directly with ExamSoft Worldwide, Inc. by the registration deadline. Rule Amendments Regarding the Uniform Bar Examination -  Beginning in February 2017, South Carolina will use the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) prepared by the National Conference of Bar Examiners.  To implement this change, the Court has filed an order amending Rule 402 of the South Carolina Appellate Court Rules.

Deadline and fees:   The Complete Application, with all application fees (including late fees), forms and applicable supplementary documentation, must be received by the Utah State Bar no later than close of business on the appropriate filing deadline.  An application is considered received on the date it arrives at the Bar’s offices, not the date it is postmarked.  If the deadline date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday the deadline date will be the first business day thereafter.

FEBRUARY EXAMINATION: 

  • Application filing deadline date – October 1
  • Late filing deadline date – October 15 (include a $100 late fee)
  • Final filing deadline date – November 1 (include a $300 late fee)
  • Retake deadline for unsuccessful applicants from the July exam immediately prior – approximately 4 weeks from the release of July results. (The exact date will be provided in the results letter.)
    • For all other retakes, normal deadlines and late fees apply.

**Applications for the February Bar will not be accepted before September 1**

JULY EXAMINATION:

If you submit your application prior to the deadline and it is incomplete, a late fee will be assessed or the application will not be accepted and may be returned to you.  This may occur even if the fee payment has already been processed.  It is your responsibility to verify that all the necessary documentation is included; you may do so by consulting the Filing Instructions.

No late applications accepted.  Character & Fitness Certification fees (subject to change): $400.00 for students currently enrolled in a JD program.  For recent graduates who received their JD less than one year prior to the filing deadline and who have not been admitted to practice law in any jurisdiction at the time of filing your questionnaire, $425.00 for all other applicants.  The exam fee is $375.00 and is payable by money order, cashier’s check or certified check.  No late applications accepted. NOTICE: West Virginia has adopted the Uniform Bar Examination with an effective date in July 2017.

Deadline and fees:  By Order of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia dated June 19, 2012, the following rates shall be in effect beginning January 1, 2013.  Reciprocity Application Filing Fee - $1,500.00;  Bar Exam Application Filing Fee - $400.00 - (For students, law school graduates not admitted in any jurisdiction, and attorneys admitted less than one year).  Attorney Bar Exam Application Filing Fee - $600.00 - (For attorneys admitted one year or more applying for the bar exam).

Late Filing Fee - $200 - (For bar exam applications postmarked April 2 to May 1 for July Exam or November 2 to December 1 for February Exam. Late filing fee is required in addition to regular filing fee for such applications. Applicants who have failed the West Virginia Bar Examination are not subject to the late filing fee for the exam immediately following the failed exam.). 

Reinstatement Fee - $150 - (For reapplying after having withdrawn within 60 days prior to a bar exam). 

MBE Transfer Fee - $50 - (From West Virginia to another jurisdiction).

 Admission by Examination

In addition to being of good moral character, admission to the Palau Bar by examination requires a passing score on four different portions of the Exam. The Exam is comprised of the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), the Multistate Performance Test (MPT) I & II, the MPRE, a Palauan-based Essay Examination, and Multistate Essay Examination (MEE). The Exam is offered annually in July of each year.

The Bar Examination in Puerto Rico (Information This article, Bar Association of Puerto Rico, The Bar Association of Puerto Rico (BAPR) (Colegio de Abogados de Puerto Rico (CAPR)) is the oldest professional association in Puerto Rico, a territory of the United States, was last updated on Friday, January 17, 2020.)

The dates for the Puerto Rico Bar Exam in 2020 are in March and September of 2020.  The bar examination in Puerto Rico is given in the Spring and the Fall each year. In addition to the essay question, the bar examination will test the attorney's knowledge in the following areas of the law:  

  • Ethics; The USDCPR Local Rule; Federal Evidence; Federal Jurisdiction and Venue; Federal Criminal Procedure (Includes the subject of Sentencing Guidelines. Applicants must be familiar with the ruling in United States v. Booker, 543 U.S. 220, 125 S.Ct. 738, 160 L.Ed.2d 621(2005) and progeny from the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals); Federal Civil Procedure; Federal Appellate Procedure; Bankruptcy -
    • the Bankruptcy Code;
    • the amendments of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005; and
    • the Bankruptcy rules.

Examination Dates For 2020

The bar exam is held twice annually on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. Visit the NCBE’s website for additional information on the UBE exam. The Virgin Islands Bar Examination will be administered on the upcoming test dates:  

MEE and MPT   February 25 and July 28, 2020  ;   February 23, 2021
MBE   February 26 and July 29, 2020 ;    February 24, 2021
